Heads & Safeguarding Governors

The training pathway for Head Teachers is the same as all staff with regular contact with children and young people in education settings.

Safeguarding Governors are volunteers (they cannot be members of staff at the setting). If they have regular contact with children and young people at the setting, they can choose to attend the training for all staff.

In addition, they may also require:

  • Safer Recruitment Training
  • Governors Safeguarding Training

Safer Recruitment Training:

Safer recruitment training is mandatory for the recruitment of staff in education settings. At least one member of any recruitment panel must have the appropriate training. Organisation leaders should use their professional judgement to determine the training needs of their staff and their school. This training is available as either:

Governors Safeguarding Training:

This training is required for all Safeguarding Governors but is also useful for other members of the Governing Body and for Head Teachers. It is not the same as the 'whole-school' Basic Safeguarding Children in Education Training, although Governors are welcome to attend this within their school.

The training will use local and national guidance to discuss:

  • Definitions of safeguarding children & young people and the Governing Body Safeguarding Role (this is available on the policies, procedures and guidance page for education settings)

  • Safeguarding policies and procedures in schools

  • Safer schools and safer recruitment and allegations against staff

  • Requirements for staff safeguarding training

  • Ofsted Inspections

  • The Head Teacher’s Annual Report to Governors
