Designated Safeguarding Leads & Deputies

The pathway for Designated Safeguarding Leads & Deputies is the training for all staff with regular contact with children and young people in education settings: 

  • Face-to-Face Safeguarding Children Induction
  • Safeguarding Children in Education e-learning
  • Basic Safeguarding Children in Education Training

Advanced INITIAL Safeguarding Children in Education:

Before you complete this training you must have completed the face-to-face Basic/Whole-School Safeguarding Children in Education Training with Sheffield Safeguarding Children Board (SSCB) within the last 3 years.

To take on the Designated Safeguarding Lead or Deputy role this 2 day training must be completed with the Sheffield Safeguarding Children Service. If you have trained in a different Local Authority you will have to complete this training with the SSCB.

This course is also useful for pastoral and support staff with safeguarding responsibilities.

The course programme will consider legislation and practice guidance to develop confidence to work in partnership with other agencies and professionals to support children and their families involved in child protection issues. There will be presentations from the trainers & outside speakers, with group exercises to assist discussion.

The course is free for maintained schools and academies. There is a charge for 'free' and independent school staff attending. 

Training dates for 2019-20 are below; all courses are held from 9am to 4pm at Floor 2 Conference Suite, Moorfoot, S1 4PL, from 9.00am-4.00pm

Advanced REFRESHER Safeguarding Children in Education:

In Sheffield Designated Safeguarding Lead's and Deputies (DSL/D's) must attend this training for a half-day each year in order to keep up to date with the developments taking place in safeguarding.

The yearly refresher programme will highlight topical child protection issues & changes in legislation, procedure and practice.

All Advanced Refresher Safeguarding Children in Education training will be held at Floor 2 Conference Suite, Moorfoot, S1 4PL.

This is a half-day course which runs in the morning (9am to 12.15pm) or in the afternoon (1.15pm to 4.30pm) on each of the dates below. When you apply for a place please state which session you want to attend.

  • The date you last completed your Advanced Initial or Advanced Refresher Safeguarding Children in Education Training (this must be within the last 2 years)

Safeguarding Under 5's in Schools Training:

For all Designated Safeguarding Leads and Deputies (DSL/D's) and Foundation Stage Leads in schools with pupils who are under 5 years old.

The training will provide an understanding of the mandatory safeguarding requirements in the EYFS Handbook, DfE 2017.

Training for the academic year 2018-19 are below. The sessions will all be held at Floor 2 Conference Suite, Moorfoot, S1 4PL.

 9 am to 12 noon, Monday 21st October 2019
1pm to 4pm, Friday 31st January 2020
9am to 12 noon, Tuesday 28th April 2020

Multi-Agency Training:

Designated Safeguarding Leads and Deputies are required to complete:

  • Working Together: promoting well-being and keeping children safe
  • Conferences and Core Groups

The Sheffield Safeguarding Children Board (SSCB) also provides a variety of multi-agency training, workshops and seminars which include: adult mental health; parents in prison; parents who are drug or alcohol misusers; neglect; working with uncooperative families, and more.

Prevent Training:

Designated Safeguarding Leads & Deputies are required to attend the ‘Workshop for Raising Awareness of Prevent’ (WRAP) and to then provide briefings, awareness, advice and support to staff & volunteers in their setting.

'Prevent' training is provided free of charge through 'Learn Sheffield'.
