Designated Safeguarding Leads & Deputies

All face to face safeguarding training is cancelled due to Covid-19 restrictions. We are developing 'virtual' training courses and will email all DSL/D's to let them know when this is available.

The Training Pathway for Designated Safeguarding Leads & Deputies includes the training pathways below:

Advanced INITIAL Safeguarding Children in Education:

Before you complete this training you must have completed the face-to-face Basic/Whole-School Safeguarding Children in Education Training with Sheffield Children Safeguarding Partnership (SCSP) within the last 3 years or the e-learning Safeguarding in Education since March 2020.

To take on the Designated Safeguarding Lead or Deputy role this 2 day training must be completed with the SCSP through the Quality Assurance & Involvement Service (QAIS). If you have trained in a different Local Authority you must complete this training with the SCSP to ensure you understand Sheffield safeguarding policies and procedures.

This course is also useful for pastoral and support staff with safeguarding responsibilities.

The course programme will consider legislation and practice guidance to develop confidence to work in partnership with other agencies and professionals to support children and their families involved in safeguarding & child protection issues. There will be presentations from the trainers & outside speakers, with group exercises to assist discussion.

The course is free for maintained schools and academies. There is a charge for 'free' and independent school staff attending. 

'Virtual' training dates for 2021 are below, however:

  • Each course will have 14 places only
  • We will prioritise settings who urgently need DSL/D training, talk to your advisor
  • If your training is not a priority, apply for a course after Spring half-term
  • We will only accept one booking per setting per course
  • Each course day will have 2 live modules: 9.30-12 and 1-3.30pm - you must attend all 4 modules to complete the training

Advanced REFRESHER Safeguarding Children in Education:

In Sheffield, Designated Safeguarding Lead's and Deputies (DSL/D's) must attend this half-day training each year to keep up to date with safeguarding developments.

The annual refresher programme will highlight topical safeguarding & child protection issues & changes in legislation, procedure and practice.

We will be adding details about 'virtual' training once they have been finalised.

Safeguarding Under 5's in Schools Training:

For all Designated Safeguarding Leads and Deputies (DSL/D's) and Foundation Stage Leads in schools with pupils who are under 5 years old.

The training will provide an understanding of the mandatory safeguarding & welfare requirements in the Statutory framework for the early years foundation stage, DfE 2017.

The EYFS Statutory Framework has not been significantly updated since 2014, so anyone who has already attended this training since Sept 2014 does not need to repeat the training. We will email everyone to let them know if this changes in the future.

Multi-Agency Training:

Designated Safeguarding Leads and Deputies are required to complete:

The SCSP also provides a variety of multi-agency training, workshops and seminars which include: adult mental health; parents in prison; parents who are drug or alcohol misusers; neglect; working with uncooperative families, and more.

Prevent Training:

Designated Safeguarding Leads & Deputies are required to attend the ‘Workshop for Raising Awareness of Prevent’ (WRAP) and to provide briefings, awareness, advice and support to staff & volunteers in their setting.
