Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking encompasses a wide range of abuses including; slavery, servitude and forced or compulsory labour and trafficking for the purpose of slavery, servitude, sexual, labour or criminal exploitation or domestic servitude. These exploitations are typically for financial benefit though this not always the principle motivation.

Statutory Guidance in relation to the Modern Slavery Act was most recently updated in November 2021 and can be found here; Modern slavery: how to identify and support victims - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

In addition the Home Office have released an e-learning specifically related to protecting children, Child Victims of Modern Slavery. The training contains information about grooming, safeguarding, sexual, criminal and other forms of exploitation and also gives information about the duty to refer exploitation concerns National Referral Mechanism.

Other external e-learning courses

The following e-learning courses are provided by external organisations.  All are free of charge and can be accessed direct by clicking the links below (please note your SCSP e-learning account password will not provide access to these programmes, you will be required to register separately with each provider).

  • Child Victims of Trafficking - ECPAT UK
  • Children and Young People - Mental Health Mind Ed is a new website funded by the Department of Health.  It offers a range of e-learning modules on the mental health of children and young people - what goes wrong and what can be done to help.  It provides a wealth of information on child development, how problems show and practical insights into when to be concerned, what to do and when to refer on to specialists.  (The Mind Ed Core Curriculum is recommended for professionals or volunteers who are not specialist child mental health practitioners).
  • Children of Prisoners - There are an estimated 200,000+ children in England and Wales who have a parent or carer in prison. Often described as the ‘innocent victim’ they risk isolation, stigma, poverty and family breakdown. This e-learning programme, offered by SCIE ( social care institute for excellence), explores the child’s experience and the social and emotional impact of parental imprisonment on a child.
  • Supporting Children's Oral Health: This short e-learning programme (approx. 20mins) provides information and advice about children’s oral health, and is aimed at both parents and practitioners. Oral health is an important part of every child’s wellbeing. It impacts on the ability for children to eat and sleep, to socialise with confidence and to concentrate at school. However, many children experience problems with their oral health, with tooth decay affecting around a quarter of five-year olds in England and it is also the leading cause of hospital admissions for five to nine-year-olds by some distance. This programme will help you to support the children you care for to maintain good oral health and prevent problems developing. By the end of the session learners will have developed their knowledge of oral health and be more confident in providing children’s oral health advice.
  • Mind Your Words Free e-learning from the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) to improve your understanding of children and young people with social, emotional and mental health needs and speech, language and communication needs. Also from RCSLT is The Box about understanding and supporting people with speech, language and communication needs in the criminal justice system.
