Safer Recruitment Training:
Safer Recruitment Training is mandatory for the recruitment of staff in education settings. At least one member of any recruitment panel must have the appropriate training. Organisation leaders should use their professional judgement to determine the training needs of their staff and their school. This training is available as either:
-
Online or face-to-face training from the NSPCC: Safer Recruitment in Education Training
-
Face-to-face Safer Recruitment Training for Governors through Learn Sheffield Governor Training. Learn Sheffield can be contacted by telephone 0114 250 7417 for enquiries about this or the links to book the training are here:

Governors Safeguarding Training:
For the academic year 2022-23 this training will be delivered virtually (unless stated otherwise in the table below). Participants will need access to the internet and a room with privacy. Where the training is delivered face to face this will be in a city centre location, venue TBC.
This training is required for all Safeguarding Governors but is also useful for other members of the Governing Body and for Head Teachers. It is not the same as the 'whole-school' Basic Safeguarding Children in Education Training, although Governors are welcome to attend this within their school.
The training incorporates local and national guidance to discuss:
-
Definitions of safeguarding and the Governing Body Role, Sept 22
-
Safeguarding policies and procedures in education settings
-
Safer schools, safer recruitment and allegations against staff
-

Safeguarding Induction and Training for ALL governors and trustees
UPDATED February 2023 to include guidance for governing body safeguarding discussion
We have worked with our colleagues in Learn Sheffield to develop our offer of support in response to the Keeping Children Safe in Education 2022 update (paragraph 81) to the safeguarding induction and training requirements for all governors and trustees. Our recommendation and offer is as follows:
- Safeguarding Governors should continue to attend the Governor Safeguarding training (the course highlighted above) every 3 years in line with our Offer and Expectations.
- Other Governors should complete the NGA Learning Link "Safeguarding : The Governor's role (2022)" over the next academic year or an equivalent. Access to the NGA Learning Link is provided free to all Sheffield settings by Learn Sheffield
- Governing Bodies should aim to hold a discussion about this training at a suitable Full Governing Body meeting over the next academic year. Guidance is available HERE for this session.
- As a minimum all governors and trustees must have had a safeguarding induction from their setting, preferably face to face with the DSL.
- All governors DO NOT NEED to attend the Governor Safeguarding training course highlighted above. Places will be limited to 2 per setting per academic year.
