Gender & sexual equality is essential for healthy relationships in all societies. However children and young people face enormous pressure to conform to particular behaviours and ideals which are reflected socially and through the media.
Stereotypes about gender and about sexuality impacts on the ability of many children and young people to recognise and feel able to express their feelings and emotions due to a fear of prejudice, discrimination and misunderstanding from people around them. Gender and sexual stereotyping can lead to isolation, eating disorders, issues relating to self-esteem, violence, bullying, mental health difficulties, substance abuse and is reflected in aspects of gang activity and youth crime.
Issues around gender identity and sexuality are increasing in public prominence. Children and young people are coming forward with issues relating to their gender identity and sexual development and it is vital that they are not placed at risk because we fail to support them appropriately.
Gender-based violence includes domestic abuse, Female Genital Mutilation, Forced Marriage, ‘Honour’ Based Violence, child sexual exploitation, issues around sexual consent and sexual health.
