Multi-agency - Specialist Training: Safeguarding Roma Slovak Children and Families

CULTURE | UNDERSTANDING | SAFEGUARDING | STRONGER PRACTICE | BETTER OUTCOMES

With facilitators Juice Vamosi, Romani Language Consultant and Filmmaker, Maria Palmai, Romani Culture and Engagement Specialist, and Dan Allen, Associate Professor of Social Work, this specialist training is for all frontline staff and supervisors working with Slovak Roma children, young people and families. 

Bringing together professional expertise, lived experience and world-leading research, this training will strengthen your knowledge, confidence and practice. You will develop a deeper understanding of effective engagement with Slovak Roma communities, distinguish poverty from concerns about neglect, and apply trauma-informed and anti-racist approaches to safeguarding.

The training will strengthen multi-agency collaboration and provide practical tools to improve outcomes for children, young people and families in Page Hall.

Using film, case studies and world leading research, delegates will:

• Explore how cultural values, language, identity, family and community dynamics can influence communication, trust, decision-making and engagement with services.
• Examine cultural and language barriers, stereotypes and misconceptions, reasons for mistrust of services, and how behaviours or responses can be better understood within their cultural and social context.
• Learn key Romani words and phrases with particular cultural significance.
• Apply cultural and linguistic understanding into professional practice enabling effective approaches to Roma engagement.

This whole day event will be at the event space within Sheffield Wednesday Football Club.
